I had to go to another website to find out how to make it work, but it's pretty simple. The bulb portion is a soft rubbery plastic, so to turn it on, you just bop the bulb against the desk. The light flickers rapidly, and after several seconds turns itself off. No way to stop it sooner, but it's not all that distracting, though a bit brighter than expected. I don't know how long it will last, but as an inexpensive novelty item, it's fun. The manufacturer (made in China) suggests it's for ages 8 and up, but since the tip covering the pen is theoretically only a "choking hazard for children under 3", seems to me anyone old enough to use pens could have fun with it. And yes, the pen writes very smoothly in dark blue-black ink-- I checked all three of the ones I bought. I got two red and one green, BTW. It arrived without any special packaging, just the loose pens, and no instructions, but so what. I did wonder if the padded envelope was enough to keep the pens from being "bumped" hard enough to turn on while in transit, so I checked and discovered that at least it didn't surprise the postal workers with an impromptu light show. It isn't bright enough to show through. Hope I covered all the possible questions!
